Cyndi Lauper, Tom Hanks, Harvey Fierstein, Nathan Lane, and Andrea Martin are among the Broadway veterans who will take part in the 27th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition, to be held April 22 and 23 at the Minskoff Theatre. The annual event is a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Hanks, currently starring on Broadway in Lucky Guy, and Lauper and Fierstein, the writing team behind the new musical Kinky Boots, will present the top-fundraising and best presentation awards. Lane, appearing in The Nance, and Martin, one of the stars of Pippin, will introduce the competition's judges, a list that includes costume designer Gregg Barnes, choreographer Josh Bergasse, Jekyll & Hyde stars Deborah Cox and Constantine Maroulis, The Nance costar Cady Huffman, BC/EFA board of directors president Paul Libin, Ann star Holland Taylor, Buyer & Cellar star Michael Urie, and Hollis Stern and Peg Wendlandt, who won their spots during an auction at least year's Broadway Flea Market.
The shows will feature performances by Marin Mazzie, who stars in an opening number directed and choreographed by Al Blackstone; Jessie Mueller, who will close the show with the Easter Bonnet anthem "Help is On the Way"; an appearance by Officer Lockstock and Little Sally (Don Richard and Jennifer Cody) of Urinetown; and a national touring show presentation choreographed by Courtney Young. Stars scheduled to appear include Cinderella stars Victoria Clark, Harriet Harris, and Ann Harada; Spider-Man Green Goblin Robert Cuccioli; Annie costar Katie Finneran; Lucky Guy cast members Christopher McDonald and Peter Scolari; Mamma Mia!'s Judy McLane; Andy Karl of Jersey Boys, Tshidi Manye and Ron Kunene of The Lion King, Mark Nelson of My Name is Asher Lev, and Shalita Grant of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
The Easter Bonnet Competition is the culmination of six weeks of post-show fundraising by the cast members of Broadway, off-Broadway, and national touring productions. Productions scheduled to perform and present bonnets include A Christmas Story: The Musical, Ann, Annie, Avenue Q, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Chicago, Cinderella, Kinky Boots, Mamma Mia!, Newsies, Once, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, The Lion King, and Wicked, with a special performance by MOMIX representing Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares, and a special bonnet presented by the Broadway Green Alliance.
