Bountiful, Texas has finally made its way back to Broadway. The star-studded production of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful will celebrate its opening night this evening at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, returning to Broadway for the first time since its premiere in 1953.
Directed by Michael Wilson (The Best Man), the cast features Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), three-time Emmy Award winner Cicely Tyson (Sounder), and Tony Award nominees Vanessa Williams (Sondheim on Sondheim) and Condola Rashad (Stick Fly).
The story follows an elderly woman named Carrie Watts (Tyson) who longs to return to her hometown of Bountiful, Texas. She leaves on her journey against the wishes of her overprotective son (Gooding) and his bossy wife (Williams), meeting a girl along the way (Rashad) with whom she reminisces about her past. Tony Award nominee Tom Wopat (Catch Me If You Can) also appears, in the role of Sheriff.
