Horton Foote's classic 1953 play, The Trip to Bountiful, found its new home last night, April 23, on the stage of the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. The revival opened to an enthusiastic audience including Michael Urie (Buyer & Cellar) and Steve Kazee (Once).
Academy Award nominee Cicely Tyson (Sounder) stars as the elderly Carrie Watts, who longs to return to her hometown of Bountiful, Texas, despite the protests of her son, played by Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), and his wife, played by Tony Award nominee Vanessa Williams (Sondheim on Sondheim). The determined Watts leaves on her journey home, disregarding her family's worries, on the way meeting a young girl played by Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad (Stick Fly), with whom Carrie reminisces about her past.
Directed by Michael Wilson (The Best Man), Foote's play can be seen at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre until July 7.
