Multi-Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim will soon be able to add another honor to his collection. New Hampshire artists' retreat The MacDowell Colony has announced plans to present the artist with the 54th annual Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement in the arts.
Sondheim, who will be the first musical theater artist to be presented with the award, said in a statement, "This is not only a wonderful honor, but a sort of homecoming to me, as I spent much of my piano-playing childhood beginning with [Edward MacDowell's] ‘To a Wild Rose' and working my way up to the Second Piano Sonata."
The award will be presented at a public ceremony on August 11 in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
Stephen Sondheim, in addition to his Tony Awards, has been honored with an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and an Olivier Award. His many works include Gypsy, Company, and Sweeney Todd.
