BROADWAY OPENING: The Columnist at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

Manhattan Theatre Club will open its world premiere production of David Auburn’s The Columnist at MTC’s Broadway house, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, on Wednesday, April 25.

Daniel Sullivan directs the play, which centers on the syndicated newspaper columnist Joseph Alsop, and his place in the Washington political world.

Tony and Emmy Award winner John Lithgow stars as Joseph Alsop, with the cast also featuring Margaret Colin, Boyd Gaines, Stephen Kunken, Marc Bonan, Grace Gummer, and Brian J. Smith.

Expected guests for the opening include Walter Bobbie, Norbert Leo Butz, Carolyn Cantor, Glenn Close, Jane Curtin, Brian d’Arcy James, Phil Donahue, Liz Flahive, Mamie Gummer, A.R. Gurney, Lisa Lampanelli, Linda Lavin, Adriane Lenox, Matthew Lopez, Rebecca Luker, Lynn Nottage, Jack O’Brien, David Hyde Pierce, Lily Rabe, Tony Roberts, Meryl Streep, Frances Sternhagen, Marlo Thomas, John Turturro, Alfred Uhry, Benjamin Walker, Kate Whorisky, and Rachel York.
