Christopher Tierney to Return to Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark

Christopher Tierney, who was injured during the December 20 performance of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, will soon be returning to the production, which is currently on hiatus to implement changes to the show.
In a statement, production spokesperson Rick Miramontez said, “Christopher Tierney has been cleared by his doctors to return to the show on April 25th (Monday). The producers and entire company are thrilled with that news.”
Tierney, who was the main aerialist and stunt double for star Reeve Carney in the show, fell while performing a stunt during the Monday, December 20 performance and was taken to Bellevue Hospital by firefighters who were called to the scene. He suffered broken ribs and other injuries. The incident resulted in the cancellation of both performances on December 22, and a heightened media and safety inspector scrutiny of the production.
The show’s director and co-creator, Julie Taymor, has given up day-to-day supervision of the musical, with Philip William McKinley hired to implement new staging. The musical’s book — which Taymor co-wrote with Glen Berger — is being revamped by playwright and comic book author Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Veteran musical consultant Paul Bogaev, sound designer Peter Hylenski, and choreographer Chase Brock have all also recently joined the creative team.
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark will resume performances at the Foxwoods Theatre on May 12 in a new version, which according to press notes, “takes the best aspects of the original, adds great new songs by Bono and The Edge, tells the story from a different angle, and will offer an even more thrilling audience experience.” The production is currently scheduled to open on Tuesday, June 14.
The musical is inspired by over 40 years of Marvel comic books. It follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and must learn that with great powers comes great responsibility.
The show’s principal cast includes Reeve Carney as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson, Patrick Page as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin, and T.V. Carpio as Arachne.
