The cast of Vineyard Theatre‘s production of The Scottsboro Boys will record an Original Cast Album of the musical today, April 23. The disc will be produced by JAY Records, with a release date to be announced.

The show features music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and a book by David Thompson. Susan Stroman directed and choreographed the Vineyard’s production, which concluded a critically acclaimed run on April 18.

The piece explores the infamous “Scottsboro” case of the 1930’s when a group of African-American teenagers were unjustly accused of attacking two white women — and the boys’ attempts to prove their innocence.

The cast features Sean Bradford, Josh Breckenridge, Derrick Cobey, John Cullum, Brandon Victor Dixon, Colman Domingo, Rodney Hicks, Kendrick Jones, Forrest McClendon, Julius Thomas III, Sharon Washington, Cody Ryan Wise, and Christian Dante White.

Conducted by Paul Masse (piano, harmonica), The Scottsboro Boys band, who will also be heard on the original cast album include: Ernie Collins (upright bass, tuba); Bruce Doctor (drums, percussion); Don Downs (trumpet, cornet); Charles Gordon (trombone); Justin Smith (violin); Andrew Sterman (flute, piccolo, clarinet); and Greg Utzig (guitar, banjo, mandolin).

As previously announced, a production of the musical — directed and choreographed by Stroman — will be presented at the Guthrie Theatre this summer.
