Theatergoers attending the April 22 performance American Idiot at the St. James Theatre were treated to a special encore by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. The show, co-authored by Armstrong, uses music by Green Day’s American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown albums.

After the cast had performed the curtain call, there was a brief pause as the cast moved to the sides of the stage and microphones were brought down to the stage edge. Armstrong then bounded onto the stage. As the audience roared, he shouted back “This is my first night on Broadway!” Green Day performed two songs, both the musical’s title song and then, “Basket Case,” which comes from their 1994 album, Dookie.

As Green Day performed, the cast cheered them on and one cast member, Theo Stockman, even tried some crowd-surfing, diving off the stage and into the center of the orchestra. He made it to Row C.

American Idiot has been directed by Michael Mayer, who has written the book with Armstrong. The company features John Gallagher, Jr., Stark Sands, Michael Esper, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Christina Sajous, Mary Faber, and Tony Vincent, along with Declan Bennett, Andrew Call, Gerard Canonico, Miguel Cervantes, Joshua Henry, Van Hughes, Brian Charles Johnson, Joshua Kobak, Lorin Latarro, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Leslie McDonel, Chase Peacock, Theo Stockman, Ben Thompson, Alysha Umphress, Aspen Vincent, and Libby Winter.
