Dixie Carter Dies at 70

Stage and television star Dixie Carter, who became famous for her portrayal of Julia Sugarbaker on television’s Designing Women, has passed away, according to a report in the Associated Press. She was 70.

Carter had myriad stage credits, including Pal Joey, Master Class and Thoroughly Modern Millie on Broadway. Off-Broadway she appeared severeal times in New York Shakespeare Festival productions, including Thomas Babe’s Buried Inside Extra.

Among her most recent stage work is a 2007 production of Arsenic and Old Lace at the Alley Theatre in Houston. She also frequently performed at the Cafe Carlyle in New York.

Carter’s other television credits include an Emmy Award-nominated turn on Desperate Housewives, Family Law, and Different Strokes.

She is survived by her husband, Hal Holbrook, ahd her daughters.
