Karen Akers to Headline Brooklyn Center’s Red Curtain Cabaret

Tony Award nominee Karen Akers will headline Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts’ gala benefit, the 2009 Red Curtain Cabaret, to be held at the Walt Whitman Theatre at Brooklyn College, May 20 at 6 pm.

At the event, BCBC will honor outgoing Brooklyn College President Christoph M. Kimmich with the Cultural Leadership Award. The evening will include a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, and a performance by Akers. All proceeds will go towards supporting BCBC’s arts education, dance, theater and music programs.

Akers received a Tony nomination for her performance in Nine, and also appeared in the original Broadway cast of Grand Hotel. She is a well known cabaret performer, and the recipient of the 2005 NY Nightlife Award for “Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist in a Major Engagement.” Her CD’s include “If We Only Have Love,” “Feels Like Home,” “Live at Rainbow & Stars,” “Unchained Melodies,” “In a Very Unusual Way,” and “Simply Styne.”
