Fiona Shaw to Direct ENO’s Riders to the Sea

Award-winning actress Fiona Shaw will direct the English National Opera’s production of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea, based on the play by JM Synge, as part of the ENO’s 2008-2009 season. The production, which will begin performances on November 27, will feature designs by Tom Pye and Dorothy Cross, and will star Patricia Bardon and Leigh Melrose.

Other highlights of the ENO season will be Richard Jones’ new productions of Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci (September 20); Jonathan Miller’s new staging of Puccini’s La Boheme (February 2); the UK premiere of Peter Sellars’ production of John Adams’ Doctor Atomic, in a co-production with New York’s Metropolitan Opera (February 25); and Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami’s production of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte (May 25).

In addition, the ENO’s collaboration with the Young Vic will continue with a new multi-media piece by celebrated director Katie Mitchell based on Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas (April 15).

The repertory will also include productions of The Barber of Seville (September 22), Partenope (October 9), Aida (October 22), Boris Godunov (November 10), The Magic Flute (January 24), Jenufa (March 12), Peter Grimes (May 9), Madame Butterfly (June 10), and L’Amour de Loin (July 3).
