Whoopi Goldberg to Appear at Color Purple Screening

Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film version of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple, will participate in a conversation immediately following a screening of the film on Monday, April 16 at Lighthouse International (111 East 59th Street). Part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ ongoing “Monday Nights With Oscar” series, the screening will begin at 7pm.

The Color Purple tells the story of a young African-American woman’s search for inner strength and self-worth in the early 1900s. Goldberg received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the lead role of Celie. The cast also includes Oprah Winfrey, who went on to produce the Broadway musical based on Walker’s novel and the film.

Tickets to the screening and discussion are $5 for the general public, $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Reservations may be made by calling 888-778-7575. Depending on availability, tickets may be purchased in person on the night of the screening. Doors open at 6:30; all seating is unreserved.
