Spring Awakening‘s Sheik and Sater Win Dramatists Guild Award

Spring Awakening authors Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater were named the winners of the 2006 Hull-Warner Award for dramatic work at the Dramatists Guild of America’s annual gala on Monday, April 23 at the Hudson Theater.

This year’s finalists for the award were Tanya Barfield for Blue Door; Sarah Ruhl for The Clean House; Scott Frankel, Michael Korie, and Doug Wright for Grey Gardens; David Lindsay-Abaire for Rabbit Hole; and Adam Rapp for Red Light Winter.

The gala was hosted by John Guare. Matt Cavenaugh, Kristin Chenoweth, Erin Davie, Raúl Esparza, John Gallagher, Jr., Debra Monk, Phoebe Strole, and the cast of [title of show] provided entertainment. Other luminaries on hand included Stephen Sondheim, Sheldon Harnick, and Rupert Holmes.

At the gala, playwright Horton Foote received the Guild’s award for Lifetime Achievement; playwright Ed Bullins received the Flora Roberts Award; Grey Gardens composer Scott Frankel received the Frederick Loewe Award for Dramatic Composition; and playwright Linda Ramsey was given the first annual Wendy Wasserstein Prize.
