Movin’ Out, Pillowman, Wicked, et al. Win Carbonell Awards

The 31st Annual Carbonell Awards, honoring the best in South Florida theater, were announced on April 9 at the Broward Center for Performing Arts. The ceremony was hosted by Bruce Adler.

In the Non-Resident category, which includes all touring and independent productions, the national tour of Wicked won for Best Production, Best Director (Joe Mantello), Best Actress (Stephanie J. Block), Best Supporting Actor (David Garrison), Best Scenic Design (Eugene Lee), Best Lighting Design (Kenneth Posner), and Best Costume Design (Susan Hilferty). Other awards went to Twyla Tharp for Best Choreography for Movin’ Out, Mark Nelson for Best Actor for I Am My Own Wife, and Gwen Hollander for Best Supporting Actress for Little Women.

In the Resident category, the Gable Stage production of Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman was named Best Production of a Play, and picked up awards for Best Director (Joseph Adler), Best Actor (Antonio Amodeo), and Best Sound Design (Matt Corey).

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s production of The Tin Pan Alley Rag was named Best Production of a Musical, Best Director (Jiri Zizka) and Best Actor (Tally Sessions), while the Caldwell Theatre Company’s production of Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor won awards for Best Ensemble Production and Best Supporting Actress (Connie SaLoutos).

Other winners include playwright Melanie Marnich for Florida Stage’s Cradle of Man and Tina Fabrique as Best Actress for Florida Stage’s Ella. The theater also won the Bill Von Maurer Award for Theatrical Excellence. Special awards were also given to Michael Spring, the director of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the New World School of the Arts,and actress Kameshia Duncan.
