Chicago, Spamalot, Wicked, et al. Win Touring Broadway Awards

The League of American Theatres and Producers announced the winners of the Touring Broadway Awards today at its annual Spring Road Conference at the Crowne Plaze Hotel in New York City. Christine Ebersole hosted the award ceremony.

The national tour of Monty Python’s Spamalot was the evening’s big winner, taking home the trophies for Best New Musical, Best Production Design, and Best Direction for Mike Nichols. Other winners included Chicago, Doubt, and The Light in the Piazza.

In addition, Wicked took home the brand new People’s Choice Award, voted on by theater fans, and actor Tom Hewitt, currently starring as Lawrence Jameson in the national tour of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, won the Touring Broadway Achievement Award, recognizing a performer, individual or organization that has shown exceptional dedication to Touring Broadway.

The Touring Broadway Awards were established in 2001. League presenters representing over 240 markets act as a blue-ribbon panel to select award recipients from their Broadway Series.
