Ashlie Atkinson, Michael Countryman, Ali Marsh, Debra Jo Rupp, and Welker White will star in Second Stage Theatre’s Uptown Festival production of Marisa Wegrzyn’s The Butcher of Baraboo, which will run from May 24-June 30 at the McGinn/Cazale. The show, to be directed by Judith Ivey, will open officially on June 11.

The play is a black comedy about Valerie (Rupp), a female butcher whose husband has gone missing. Everyone suspects she played a hand in his disappearance — most notably, her nosy sister-in-law (White) who also happens to be the town’s sheriff. And Valerie’s daughter (Atkinson), a drug-pushing pharmacist, may know more than she lets on.

The show’s creative team includes Beowulf Borritt (sets), Andrea Lauer (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lighting), and Ryan Rummery (sound). Ivey, a two-time Tony Award winner for acting, recently directed Fugue at the Cherry Lane Theatre.

For the Festival’s second production, Jeremy Dobrish will direct Josh Tobiessen’s Election Day, a dark comedy about the price of political (and personal) campaigns. The show runs from July 16-August 25, with an opening slated for August 1.
