Idina Menzel to Star in London Wicked

Idina Menzel will re-create her Tony Award-winning role of Elphaba in the London production of Wicked, which will begin performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on September 7. The production, which will be directed by Joe Mantello, will open officially on September 27. No other casting has been announced, nor has the specific length of Menzel’s stay in the role.

Adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel,Wicked features a book by Winnie Holzman, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, scenic design by Eugene Lee, costumes by Susan Hilferty, lighting by Kenneth Posner, and musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

Menzel was most recently seen on the New York stage in Michael John LaChiusa’s See What I Wanna See, for which she has been honored by the Drama League. She is best known for playing Maureen in the original Broadway production and film version of Rent, and will participate in a special 10th Anniversary Concert of the show on Monday, April 24.
