Tony Winner Julie Taymor Joins Drama Desk Annual Spring Luncheon Panel

Panelists including actors Michael Pennington and Scott Shepherd will discuss the Shakespearean trend of our current theater season.

Julie Taymor, Tony Award-winning director of The Lion King, will join a panel discussing "Why Shakespeare? Why Now?" at Drama Desk's upcoming spring luncheon. The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 4 in the Eugenia Room on the fourth floor of Sardi's Restaurant from 11:45am-2:30pm.

Previously announced expert panelists who are scheduled to participate in the event include actor Michael Pennington (starring as King Lear at Theatre for a New Audience in Brooklyn), actor Scott Shepherd (Cry, Trojans!, The Wooster Group's Troilus & Cressida), and director Daniel Sullivan (The Comedy of Errors, Shakespeare in the Park). Drama Desk member, critic, and playwright Carol Rocamora will moderate the examination of the current theater season's Shakespearean record.

The event will be held in advance of the 59th Annual Drama Desk Awards, presented by TheaterMania, scheduled to take place on Sunday June 1 at the Town Hall.

Julie Taymor is the Tony-winning and Oscar-nominated director whose productions range from musicals (The Lion King) and plays (A Midsummer Night's Dream) to classical operas (The Magic Flute) and films (Across the Universe).
