Sybil Christopher, founder of Bay Street Theatre as well as mother of Kate Burton and former wife of Richard Burton, has passed away at the age of 83 in Manhattan.
Christopher was born Sybil Williams on March 27, 1929, in South Wales. As a young woman, she attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and later met film star Richard Burton while working on the movie The Last Days of Dolwyn. The two were married in 1949, but the marriage ended in 1963 after Burton began his well-known affair with actress Elizabeth Taylor.
After her divorce from Burton, Christopher settled in New York City with the couple's two daughters. There, she founded the Manhattan nightclub Arthur, which became a popular celebrity hangout. She married Jordan Christopher, lead singer of her club's band, in 1966, and went on to help found both the New Theater on 54th Street and Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY.
Sybil Christopher is survived by her daughters, actress Kate Burton, Jessica Burton, and Amy Christopher.
