The cast of the upcoming Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson's classic musical Pippin offered a preview of the musical on Friday, March 8 at Manhattan Movement Studios, where the production currently rehearses. The high-flying revival, which comes to Broadway's Music Box Theatre directly from the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is directed by Tony Award nominee Diane Paulus (The Gershwins' Porgy & Bess). Previews begin on March 23 in advance of an April 25 opening.
With a Tony-nominated score by Schwartz and book by Hirson, Pippin tells the coming-of-age story of a young prince as he attempts to find his purpose in the world. This is the musical's first Broadway appearance since its premiere in 1972, which won five Tony Awards and ran for nearly 2000 performances. The score features such classic songs as "Magic to Do," "Corner of the Sky," and "Glory."
Leading the company are Tony Award nominee Patina Miller (Sister Act), taking on the role of Leading Player, Matthew James Thomas (Spider-man Turn Off the Dark) as Pippin, Tony Award nominee Terrence Mann (Les Misérables) as Charles, Tony Award nominee Charlotte d'Amboise (A Chorus Line) as Fastrada, Rachel Bay Jones (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) as Catherine, and Tony Award winner Andrea Martin (Young Frankenstein) as Berthe. The ensemble also includes Erik Altemus, Gregory Arsenal, Andrew Cekala, Lolita Costet, Colin Cunliffe, Andrew Fitch, Orion Griffiths, Viktoria Grimmy, Sabrina Harper, Olga Karmansky, Bethany Moore, Brad Musgrove, Stephanie Pope, Philip Rosenberg, Yannick Thomas, Molly Tynes, Anthony Wayne, and Ashton Woerz.
Featured on the creative team are original Broadway production cast member Chet Walker, who will provide choreography in the style of Bob Fosse, the musical's original director; circus creator Gypsy Snider (of the Montreal-based circus troupe 7 Fingers), Scott Pask (scenic design), Dominique Lemieux (costume design), Kenneth Posner (lighting design), Clive Goodwin (sound design), Larry Hochman (orchestrations), Nadia DiGiallonardo (music supervisor), and Charlie Alterman (musical director).
