Obie Award winners Kathleen Chalfant (Wit) and Kate Mulgrew (Equus) will star as a pair of old friends contending with the trials of time in the Vineyard Theatre's upcoming production of Jenny Schwartz's new play, Somewhere Fun. Beginning previews May 15 in advance of a June 4 opening, the production reunites playwright Schwartz with both the Vineyard and director Anne Kauffman, who helmed her acclaimed play God's Ear in 2008.
Somewhere Fun follows two women who met in Central Park when their children were barely born and are reunited on a windy fall day thirty-five years later. With their children grown and the world changing, the ladies find themselves contending with the joy, terror, and surprises of time.
Joining Chalfant and Mulgrew is Makenna Ballard (off-Broadway debut), Richard Bekins (Love! Valour! Compassion!), Griffin Birney (The Big Meal), Brooke Bloom (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close), Greg Keller (Belleville), Maria Elena Ramirez (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), and Mary Shultz (Go Back to Where You Are). The creative team includes Marsha Ginsberg (scenic design), Jessica Pabst (costume design), Japhy Weideman (lighting design), Daniel Kluger (sound design), and Paul Huntley (wig design).
Currently running at the Vineyard Theatre is Rajiv Joseph's two-character drama, The North Pool, starring Stephen Barker Turner and Babak Tafti. The off-Broadway company's season opened with Douglas McGrath's docudrama Checkers starring Tony Award winner Anthony LaPaglia (A View from the Bridge) and Tony Award nominee Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) as Richard and Pat Nixon.
