Disney's Newsies celebrated its first anniversary on Broadway with a pre-Thursday matinee cake-cutting at the Nederlander Theatre on March 28. Directed by Jeff Calhoun, Newsies officially opened on March 29, 2012, after playing an acclaimed run at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse.
Joining Newsies stars Corey Cott (who plays charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly) and Kara Lindsay (journalist Katherine Plummer) were book writer Harvey Fierstein, the Tony Award-winning composer/lyricists Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, director Calhoun, producer Thomas Schumacher, and Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli. The Newsies family gathered around a cake specially designed for the occasion by Mauro Castano of the hit television series Cake Boss.
Inspired by the cult-classic 1992 film, Newsies tells the story of a group of tenacious newsboys at the turn of the last century who band together to form a union and lead a strike after selling prices are raised. Joining Cott and Lindsay in the principal company are John Dossett (Giant), LaVon Fisher-Wilson (Lysistrata Jones), Ben Fankhauser (Spring Awakening), and Andy Richardson (Gypsy), as well as Joshua Colley, Nicholas Lampiasi, Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Julian DeGuzman, Michael Fatica, John Michael Fiumara, Julie Foldesi, Hogan Fulton, David Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Garett Hawe, Liana Hunt, Adam Kaplan, Evan Kasprzak, Jess Le Protto, Stuart Marland, Tommy Martinez, Jack Scott, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Iain Young, and Stuart Zagnit.
