The La Jolla Playhouse will present The Nightingale, a new musical by Tony Award winners Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, July 10-August 5 as part of its “Page to Stage Play Development Program.” The production will be directed by Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, the musical tells the story of a young emperor in ancient China, whose luxurious but constricted life inside the walls of the Forbidden City is upended by the song of an extraordinary bird that lives beyond his reach.

Sater and Sheik won Tony Awards for Spring Awakening, and the pair collaborated on Nero.

Kaufman’s many stage credits, as writer and director, include Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, I Am My Own Wife, 33 Variations, The Laramie Project, and Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays.
