Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsiesis based on the film of the same name, and includes six songs added for the stage. The show features music by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Jeff Calhoun directs, with choreography by Christopher Gattelli.
The show tells the story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged 'newsies,' who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys' expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what's right.
Jeremy Jordan stars as Jack, with the principal cast also including John Dossett (Joseph Pulitzer), Kara Lindsay (Katherine Plumber), Capathia Jenkins (Medda Larkin), Ben Fankhauser (Davey), and Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie), with Lewis Grosso and Matthew Schecter alternating the role of Les.
