The program will center on a blue-collar father and his family. Newton will play the central character's unmarried daughter who, along with her 12-year-old son, lives with her parents and her recently widowed grandmother.

Newton starred in the City Center Encores! production of Girl Crazy. She is best known for her role as Amanda Taven on ABC's Ugly Betty and appeared at Feinstein's at Loews Regency with her former Ugly Betty co-star Michael Urie.
