Metropolitan Opera Star Philip Langridge Dies at 70

Opera star Philip Langridge has died in England from cancer at the age of 70, according to The New York Times.

Langridge most recently appeared onstage earlier this year as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel. His many other roles at the Met included Ferrando in Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, Prince Shuisky in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, Loge in Wagner’s Das Rheingold, Don Basilio in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro, Captain Vere in Britten’s Billy Budd, and the title role in Britten’s Peter Grimes..

Among the other noteworthy roles he portrayed throughout his career were Quint in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, Aschenbach in Britten’s Death in Venice, and Heirus in Harrison Birtwistle’s The Minotaur.

He is survived by his wife, the mezzo-soprano Ann Murray; and his children Stephen, Jonathan, Anita, and Jennifer.
