Martin Campbell is directing the film, which is based on the DC Comics superhero. Filming has begun in New Orleans. The script is by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, with rewrites by Michael Goldenberg.

Bassett's stage credits include the original Broadway production of August Wilson's Joe Turner's Come and Gone, the Public Theater production of Macbeth opposite Alec Baldwin, and the Pasadena Playhouse production of Wilson's Fences.
