Avenue Q to Keep "George Bush" Lyric

The Broadway musical Avenue Q, currently performing at the Golden Theatre, will keep the lyric “George Bush!” in the show’s song, “For Now.”

The producers of the show previously held a contest to find replacement words, following Barack Obama’s inauguration as President. This resulted in four winning lyrics — “Recession,” “Prop 8,” “This show,” and “Your mother-in-law” — which were tried out during performances of the show.

In a press statement, librettist Jeff Whitty said, “We discovered there is nothing like the strong response the Bush line gets from the audience.” So, the show’s creators — who also include Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx — decided on a fifth choice, “George Bush WAS only for now,” submitted by Brian Barnett of Defiance, Ohio who will receive a prize package including an autographed Playbill, a cast recording, a copy of the Avenue Q Coffee Table book, and an autographed copy of the revised script with the new lyric included.

However, when the musical’s national tour will play California, the lyric “Prop 8” will be used.
