Annie Dorsen, the critically acclaimed co-creator and director of the hit rock musical Passing Strange, will present her new performance event Democracy in America in association with The Foundry Theatre and Performance Space 122, March 30-April 20.

The piece began in the winter of 2003 when Dorsen invited about 30 artists to discuss creating a performance using Alexis de Tocqueville’s classic work of political theory as a starting-place. She proposed a performance that was open to whomever wished to participate, and in November 2007 held an online worldwide marketplace open to the public in which anything that can be on a stage was available for sale — including the content of what would become the live performance. The performance of Democracy in America will be comprised entirely of these purchases.

The piece will be performed by Okwui Okpokwasili, Philippa Kaye, and Anthony Torn. The creative team will include video artist Kate Howard, lighting designer Sarah Sidmon, and sound designer Bart Fasbender.

Dorsen’s directing credits include Portraits: Night and Day, Antigone Arkhe, The Crazy Girl, and Somewhere Someplace Else. She received an Audelco Award for her direction of Passing Strange.
