TheatreWorks has announced the new musicals and plays that will make up its seventh annual 2008 New Works Festival, to run April 12-20.

The festival will start with Unlock’d (April 12-17) a new musical with book and lyrics by Sam Carner, and music by Derek Gregor. Directed by Jana Robbins, the show is a spoof of 18th-century romance, based on a work by Alexander Pope. Creating Claire (April 13-20) will follow, a new play by Joe DiPietro with direction by Robert Kelley.

The next new play will be Bess Wohl’s Touch(ed) (April 16-18), which will be directed by Kent Nicholson. The final piece of the festival will be Girlfriend (April 19-20) a new musical written by Todd Almond with music and lyrics by popular recording artist Matthew Sweet. This production will be directed by Patrick Trettenero.

TheatreWorks will also host Theatre Bay Area’s local Playwrights Showcase, April 15, which will feature playwrights discussing and reading excerpts from their new plays.
