Five musicals, including a new version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, and Tennessee Williams’ classic play Summer and Smoke have been announced for production at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2006-2007.

The season will begin with Stephen Schwartz’s classic 1970s musical Godspell (September 20-October 22), to be followed by A Wonderful Life, the Sheldon Harnick-Joe Raposo-Jerry Depuit musical adaptation of the beloved Frank Capra film It’s A Wonderful Life (November 8-December 17). Summer and Smoke, Williams’s tale of a lonely minister’s daughter who is courted by a former lover, will run January 10-February 11; this co-production with Hartford Stage will be directed by Michael Wilson.

Mark S. Hoebee, Paper Mill’s associate artistic director, is set to helm Romance/Romance, a pair of one-act musicals by Keith Herrmann and Barry Harman about the highs and lows of love (February 28-April 1). Next up will be the stage version of the famed MGM movie musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (April 11-May 13). The last show of the season will be Pirates!, adapted from the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta and directed by Gordon Greenberg (June 6-July 15).
