Oscar and Tony Award winner Mercedes Ruehl will star as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in the Bay Street Theatre production of Diane Shaffer’s new play Viva La Vida. The production, to run July 18-August 6, will be directed by Susanna Tubert.

Prior to that show, Jack Hoffsiss will direct Ronald Harwood’s Quartet, about a group of former opera stars getting ready to celebrate Verdi’s birthday (May 23-June 3), followed by a new production of the Tony Award-winning musical The Who’s Tommy, directed by Marcia Milgrim Dodge (June 13-July 9). The season will conclude with the New York premiere of Crispin Whittell’s Darwin in Malibu, directed by Daniel Gerroll (August 15-September 3).

In addition, the Bay Street Comedy Club will host such theater veterans as Robert Klein (May 29), David Alan Grier (June 26), Caroline Rhea (July 3), and Lewis Black (August 28).
