Julianne Moore will make her Broadway debut in the world premiere production of David Hare’s The Vertical Hour, scheduled to open on November 30 at a Shubert Theater to be announced.

The show will be directed by Sam Mendes, who won an Academy Award for his direction of the film American Beauty; his Broadway credits include Cabaret, The Blue Room, and Gypsy. The design team for The Vertical Hour consists of Scott Pask (sets), Ann Roth (costumes), and Brian MacDevitt (lighting).

Moore will portray Nadia, a war correspondent turned Yale professor who takes a brief holiday in Wales with her boyfriend. While there, she comes into contact with an Englishman whose culture and beliefs are surprising and challenging to her own. Hare’s other plays include Amy’s View, Via Dolorosa, Plenty, and Stuff Happens, which will begin performances next week at the Public Theater.

In 2004, Moore received dual Oscar nominations for her work in The Hours and Far From Heaven. Among the many other films in which she has starred are Freedomland, Hannibal, An Ideal Husband, Magnolia, and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. She was last seen on the New York stage in Vanya on 42nd Street.
