Josh Charles and Bill Smitrovich will star in the American Conservatory Theatre’s production of Caryl Churchill’s two-hander A Number, April 18-28. The production, to be directed by Steppenwolf Theatre Comany member Anna D. Shapiro, will officially open on May 3.

The play concerns a man who is confronted by three of his grown sons (all played by Charles), who are actually clones cut from the same genetic cloth. The show was seen at the New York Theatre Workshop last season starring Sam Shepard and Dallas Roberts. Churchill’s other work includes Top Girls, Cloud 9, Serious Money, and The Shriker.

The show’s design team includes David Korins (set design), Callie Floor (costume design), Russell H. Champa (lighting design), and Rob Milburn and Michael Bodeen (sound design).

Charles received a Drama Desk Award for his work in The Distance From Here and recently appeared in The Well-Appointed Room in Chicago. He is known for such films as Dead Poets Society, S.W.A.T., and Four Brothers, and for the television series Sports Night. Smitrovich starred on Broadway in the original production of Arthur Miller’s The American Clock and at Lincoln Center in Far East. He is best known for his role as Andrew Thacher, opposite Patti LuPone, in the TV series Life Goes On.
