Blackhurst, Gomez, Houdyshell, McNally, Sendak, Weigert, et al. Win Bay Area Critics Awards

Klea Blackhurst, Marga Gomez, Jayne Houdyshell, Terrence McNally, Maurice Sendak, and Robin Weigert are among the winners of the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards. A total of 50 awards were given out by the association, whose members saw more than 400 productions last season.

The touring production of Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife and the American Conservatory Theater production of The Overcoat each won seven awards, including Best Touring Production. Other winners include the California Shakespeare Theatre’s Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickelby, the Aurora Theatre Company’s revival of Arthur Miller’s The Price, the American Musical Theatre of San Jose’s revival of A Chorus Line, and the TheatreWorks production of Into The Woods.

Blackhurst was one of three women named Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in the 42nd Street Moon production of Red, Hot, and Blue. Gomez received the Best Solo Performance award for Los Big Names, which is set to open in New York next month. Houdyshell won the Best Female Supporting Performance for her work in Well, which begins previews on Broadway this week.

McNally won the Best Original Script award for Crucifixion, presented by the New Conservatory Theatre Center. Sendak and co-designer Kris Stone won for their work on the Berkeley Rep production of Brundibar and Comedy on the Bridge, which will move to the New Victory Theatre in Manhattan next month. Weigert was named Best Actress for the A.C.T. production of A Moon for the Misbegotten.
