Directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Wayne Cilento, this production of the 1966 Cy Coleman-Dorothy Fields-Neil Simon musical stars Charlotte d'Amboise and Denis O'Hare. The show was beset by problems during the Chicago leg of its three-city pre-Broadway tryout when originally announced star Christina Applegate broke her foot during a performance. Though it was originally anticipated that Applegate might recover in time for the show's Broadway opening, producers Barry and Fran Weissler replaced her with her standby, d'Amboise, who assumed the role for the Boston leg of the tryout. Two other cast members, Natascia Diaz and Solange Sandy, were also replaced on the road by Janine LaManna and Kyra DaCosta
"The Sweet Charity company is one of the most gifted and talented groups of individuals I've ever had the privilege of working with," said Barry Weissler. "I know I speak on behalf of my partners when I say how deeply proud we are of everyone who worked on this production. However, our weak sales on the road and in New York have left us with little choice other than to make the painful but fiscally responsible decision to close the production in Boston. I want to acknowledge the contributions of Christina Applegate, Denis O'Hare, Walter Bobbie, Wayne Cilento, and Charlotte d'Amboise, all of whom are nothing short of extraordinary."
