Lead producer Barry Weissler has just announced that the revival of William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker will suspend performances after it completes its engagement at the Charlotte Rep Theatre in Charlotte, N.C. on March 30 and will not come to Broadway next month as originally planned.

The production — starring Hilary Swank (an Academy Award winner for Boys Don’t Cry) as Annie Sullivan and Skye McCole Bartusiak as Helen Keller, with Marianne Elliott directing — was originally scheduled to begin previews at the Music Box Theatre on April 8 and to open on April 24.

“There are several reasons that the producers have decided to close the production at this time,” Weissler said in a statement. “We value the work of the creative staff and especially of Ms. Swank. The truth of the matter is that the production needs some reworking and is not ready in our opinion to open on Broadway so soon. We are committed to the best production possible. It is the plan that Swank and Bartusiak will continue with the project and we can announce a new schedule shortly.”
