Second Stage Theatre Uptown Season to Kick Off With Two New American Plays

Bess Wohl’s ”American Hero” and Tanya Saracho’s ”Mala Hierba” will play at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre.

Tanya Saracho is the author of Mala Hierba, one of two new American plays to be presented during the 12th annual Second Stage Theatre Uptown Series this summer.

Second Stage Theatre has announced that Bess Wohl's American Hero and Tanya Saracho's Mala Hierba will be the two plays presented during its 12th annual Uptown Series this summer. Both plays will be produced at Second Stage Theatre's uptown home, the McGinn/Cazale Theatre.

Leigh Silverman will direct the New York premiere of Wohl's American Hero, which will run from May 13-June 8, with an opening night set for May 22. The play follows three up-and-coming "sandwich artists" at a toasted-sub franchise as their shot at the American dream is interrupted by a series of strange events.

The New York premiere of Mala Hierba, written by Tanya Saracho and directed by Jerry Ruiz, will begin previews on July 14 and run through August 10, with an opening night set for July 24. In the play, Liliana, the seemingly flawless trophy wife of a border magnate living in Texas, is forced to decide between the value of obligation versus the price of freedom.

Second Stage Theatre Uptown aims to develop and provide exposure for the voices of new theater artists.
