Kinky Boots Star Billy Porter to Release Broadway-Themed Solo Album

On April 15, Tony Award-winning Kinky Boots star Billy Porter will release a new solo album entitled Billy's Back on Broadway — a nod to Sammy Davis Jr.'s Sammy's Back on Broadway. It will mark his debut on Concord Records and be his first solo album in nearly a decade.

Drawing from his roots in gospel, soul, and R&B, Billy's Back on Broadway features 10 classic Broadway tunes that focus on inspiration, empowerment, and hope. "The canon of great Broadway songs is so vast and I have so many favorites that the only way I could narrow them down was to choose a theme," Porter said. "Once I settled on what I wanted to say and the journey I wanted the listener to take, the songs made their presence known rather quickly."

Porter released his debut solo album Untitled, on A&M Records in 1997, and a second album, At the Corner of Broadway + Soul, on Sh-K-Boom Records in 2005. In January 2014, the original Broadway cast recording of Kinky Boots won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, making Porter an official Grammy Award winner as one of the album's principal vocalists.
