Spoiler Alert!: Superman’s Identity Revealed For Encores! Superhero Musical
Encores! Artistic Director Jack Viertel announced today that Edward Watts will take on the role of Superman (or Clark Kent for those who prefer his civilian name) in the upcoming production of It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman, scheduled for a seven-performance run from March 20-24 at the New York City Center.
An experienced musical theater actor, Watts is fresh off a run in Broadway’s Scandalous in the dual roles of Robert Semple and David Hutton. He has also appeared in Broadway’s Finian’s Rainbow, off-Broadway’s The Fantasticks, and a New York City Opera production of The Most Happy Fella.
It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman is a musical centered around the popular DC Comics superhero with a book by the David Newman and Robert Benton, and music and lyrics by the iconic Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, the partnership that brought us Bye Bye Birdie. The production originally opened on Broadway on March 29, 1966 with Bob Holiday in the title role, and ran for only 129 performances.
Under the direction of Tony Award winner John Rando (Urinetown), the upcoming Encores! production will feature the Emmy-winning choreography of Joshua Bergasse (NBC’s Smash) and music direction by Broadway veteran and Emmy winner Rob Berman (Finian’s Rainbow).
