As Fantine, Hathaway played a destitute mother who turns to prostitution to provide for her young daughter Cosette, before dying of consumption and leaving Cosette in the care of Jean Valjean (played by Broadway veteran Hugh Jackman). In addition to the Oscar, Hathaway won both SAG and Golden Globe Awards for her role in the film.

The movie musical, which is nominated for an Oscar in the Best Picture category, is based on Victor Hugo's classic novel of the same name. Like the Broadway musical, it features music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, original adaptation by Trevor Nunn and John Caird, and additional material by James Fenton.

"It came true," Hathaway said in her acceptance speech. "There are so many people whose generosity and support are the reason I'm standing here right now. Especially, Hugh Jackman."
