The current Broadway revival of Ruth and Augustus Goetz’s The Heiress, starring 2013 Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Downtown Abbey heartthrob Dan Stevens, will recoup its $3 million capitalization during its final week of performances, the show’s producers have announced. The production, directed by Tony nominee Moises Kaufman (The Laramie Project), runs through February 9 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

With this news, The Heiress is the second show of the 2012-2013 Broadway season to officially become a hit, following hot on the heels of Daniel Sullivan’s revival of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, which earned back its $3.3 million investment before closing on January 20.

Joining Chastain, who plays the painfully shy Catherine Sloper, and Stevens, who plays her dashing suitor, Morris Townsend, are Academy Award nominee David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck) as Dr. Austin Sloper, Tony Award winner Judith Ivey (Hurlyburly) as Aunt Lavinia Penniman, as well as Molly Camp, Kieran Campion, Virginia Kull, Mairin Lee, Ben Livingston, Dee Nelson and Caitlin O’Connell. The design team includes Derek McLane (sets), Albert Wolsky (costumes), David Lander (lighting), Leon Rothenberg (sound). and Peter Golub (original music).

Inspired by the 1880 novel Washington Square by Henry James, The Heiress premiered on Broadway in 1947 and was most recently seen in a Tony Award-winning revival in 1995 starring Cherry Jones. The acclaimed 1949 film adaptation starred Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift, and Ralph Richardson. The drama explores the relationship between the sheltered Catherine, her emotionally removed father, and the suitor who can change her life.
