Dancing in the Streets! The Cast of Broadway’s Motown: The Musical Holds Open Rehearsal

The Motown family meets the press at The New 42nd Street Studios.

The cast and creative team of Broadway’s upcoming Motown: The Musical offered a sneak preview of the world premiere production on Thursday, February 7 at their rehearsal hall, The New 42nd Street Studios. The production, directed by Charles Randolph-Wright (Guys and Dolls) begins previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 11 in advance of an April 14 opening.

Motown: The Musical follows the rise of Motown founder Berry Gordy, from featherweight boxer to the high-powered music mogul responsible for launching the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and many others. Featuring a book by Gordy, the work takes its score from Motown’s illustrious song catalogue, including hits like “Do You Love Me,” “My Girl,” “ABC,” and “Dancing in the Street.”

Leading the company are Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (The Color Purple) and Valisia LeKae (The Book of Mormon) as Berry Gordy and Diana Ross, with Charl Brown (Sister Act) as Smokey Robinson, Bryan Terrell Clark (Fences) as Marvin Gaye, Raymond Luke Jr. and Jibreel Mawry alternating the roles of Young Berry Gordy, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder, and an ensemble that includes Timothy J. Alex, Nicholas Christopher, Rebecca E. Covington, Ariana DeBose, Andrea Dora, Preston W. Dugger III, Wilkie Ferguson, Dionne Figgins, Marva Hicks, Sasha Hutchings, Lauren Lim Jackson, Morgan James, John Jellison, Crystal Joy, Grasan Kingsberry, Marielys Molina, Sydney Morton, Jarran Muse, Jesse Nager, Milton Craig Nealy, N’Kenge, Dominic Nolfi, Saycon Sengbloh, Ryan Shaw, Jamal Story, Eric LaJuan Summers, Ephraim Sykes, Julius Thomas III, Daniel J. Watts, and Donald Webber, Jr.
