Tony Award nominees Will Swenson (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) and David Pittu (Is He Dead?), Broadway veterans Jenny Powers (Little Women), Erich Bergen (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Alli Mauzey (Cry-Baby), and stage and film veteran James Saito (The Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) will join Edward Watts (Scandalous) in the upcoming New York City Center Encores! production of It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Superman. Running March 20-24, the 1966 musical is directed by John Rando, with choreography by Joshua Bergasse, and musical direction by Rob Berman.
As previously announced, Watts will take on the title role in the Charles Strouse and Lee Adams Musical, which features a book by David Newman and Robert Benton based on the classic "Superman" comic strip. Joining him are Powers as love interest Lois Lane, David Pittu as the villainous, ten-time Nobel Prize-losing scientist Dr. Abner Sedgwick, Swenson as romantic rival Max Mencken, Mauzey as Sydney, Max's secretary, Saito as Father Ling, and Bergen as Jim Morgan. Also featured in the production are Nathaniel Braga, Craig Henningsen, Suo Liu, Jason Ng, Wendi Bergamini, Ward Billeisen, Sam Bolen, Stephen Carrasco, Hannah Florence, Sara Jean Ford, Miles Johnson, Max Kumangai, Samantha Massell, Skye Mattox, Kenita R. Miller, Michael Mindlin, Jessica Lea Patty, David Scott Purdy, Manuel Stark, Charlie Williams, Kirsten Wyatt, and Samantha Zack.
It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Superman opened on March 29, 1966 at Broadway's Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon) and ran for 129 performances. Directed by Harold Prince, the original production starred Bob Holiday as Superman, Patricia Marand as Lois Lane, Jack Cassidy as Max Mencken, and Linda Lavin as Sydney. The Strouse-Adams score includes the songs "You've Got Possibilities," "You've Got What I Need," and "I'm Finished Yet."
