A settlement has been reached between The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and 8 Legged Productions LLC, the producer of Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, currently playing at the Foxwoods Theatre. The agreement covers all pending litigation between the two organizations.

Julie Taymor, the original director and contributing writer of the musical, will receive full royalties for her services as director from the inception of the run through its duration, and will also receive other amounts for her work as a collaborator, when the show’s New York production recoups. The parties have also reached agreement with regard to compensation owed for subsequent productions.

The agreement specifies that Taymor’s work on the production is now complete, and that she will have no further involvement with the show as either director or collaborator. Furthermore, all claims of breach by the parties in the arbitration have been withdrawn.

Taymor’s role as an author seems to be the one outstanding issue not resolved by the agreement between the SDC and 8 Legged Productions. In a statement, SDC President Karen Azenberg remarks, “We are pleased to resolve our issues with the producer of Spider-Man and to welcome it into our collective bargaining partnership. It has employed four of our members (Julie Taymor, Daniel Ezralow, Philip McKinley and Chase Brock) and the success of the show is in our mutual interest. The litigation between us is over, and we are hopeful that any remaining issues between the producer and Ms. Taymor regarding her role as author can also be
resolved to the satisfaction of all.”
