Annie Baker, Tanya Barfield, Richard Greenberg to Premiere Works for Playwrights Horizons’ New Season

Playwrights Horizons has announced the complete line-up for its 2012-2013 season, which will include four world premieres and two New York premieres. Run dates and casting will be announced at a later date.

Michael Greif will direct the new musical Far From Heaven, featuring a book by Richard Greenberg and a score by Scott Frankel (music) and Michael Korie (lyrics). The show focuses on Cathy Whitaker, who seems to be the picture-perfect wife and mother in 1957 suburban Connecticut. But roiling beneath the surface, secret longings and forbidden desires cause her world to unravel — with incendiary consequences. As previously reported, the show will receive a “preview production” at the Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer, where the creative team will continue to develop the musical.

Amy Herzog’s new play, The Great God Pan will be directed by Carolyn Cantor. It centers on Jamie, whose life is thrown into a tailspin when a possible childhood trauma comes to light.

Tanya Barfield will debut her new play, The Call, to be directed by Leigh Silverman. It centers on a couple who decide to adopt a child from Africa, opening up a well of uncertainty that speaks to their very identity as White Americans.

The New York premieres will include Samuel D. Hunter’s The Whale, directed by Davis McCallum, and the previously reported new production of Lisa D’Amour’s Detroit, which will be directed by Anne Kauffman as the company’s first Mainstage Theater production in Fall 2012.
