Spider-Man Adds Paul Bogaev as Consultant; Producers Deny Hiring Co-Director

The producers of the new Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, at the Foxwoods Theatre have hired theater veteran Paul Bogaev as a consultant to help improve the performance, vocal and orchestration arrangements, and sound quality of the songs and numbers, according to The New York Times.

On Sunday, the show’s producers officially denied that they are bringing a co-director to work with director Julie Taymor, contrary to published reports. The production has also refused to confirm reports that playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has either been hired to revamp the show’s script or that talks with the writer have occurred. “The production has not brought anyone on and the original creative team remains firmly in place, with Julie Taymor at the helm.” said a statement sent by spokesperson Rick Miramontez.

According to sources, script and music changes are being made to the production in anticipation for the official press opening, which is currently slated for March 15. Many publications (but not TheaterMania) have filed interim reviews of the show. Producers have previously stated that they would not reschedule the opening..

The musical features music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of the band U2, and a book by director Julie Taymor and Glen Berger. Inspired by over 40 years of Marvel comic books, the show follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and must learn that with great powers comes great responsibility.

The show stars Reeve Carney as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson, Patrick Page as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin, and T.V. Carpio as Arachne. It also features Michael Mulheren, Ken Marks, Isabel Keating, Jeb Brown, Mat Devine, Gideon Glick, Jonathan Schwartz, Matthew James Thomas, Laura Beth Wells, Matt Caplan, Dwayne Clark, Luther Creek, Kevin Aubin, Gerald Avery, Collin Baja, Marcus Bellamy, Emmanuel Brown, Daniel Curry, Erin Elliott, Craig Henningsen, Dana Marie Ingraham, Ayo Janeen Jackson, Heather Lang, Alice Lee, Ari Loeb, Natalie Lomonte, Kevin Loomis, Kristin Martin, Jodi McFadden, Kristen Oei, America Olivo, Jennifer Christine Perry, Kyle Post, Brandon Rubendall, Sean Samuels, Dollar Tan, and Christopher Tierney.
