Primary Stages celebrated the opening of its world premiere production of A.R. Gurney's Black Tie, performing at 59 E59 Theaters, on February 8.

The production is directed by Mark Lamos, and features Ari Brand, Daniel Davis, Gregg Edelman, Carolyn McCormick, and Elvy Yost. Among the opening night guests were actors Penny Fuller and Patch Darragh.

In the play, father of the groom, Curtis, simply wants to make a memorable toast. But before he is able to raise his glass, he must defend the time-honored ways of his past, including his attire. Cultures clash when a surprise guest is announced, threatening to throw convention out the window. Curtis finds that balancing the standards of his late father and the needs of his future family may prove too messy for a black tie affair.

Byron W. Brown, Mayor of the City of Buffalo proclaimed February 8, as "A.R. Gurney Day" in honor of the famed Buffalo-born playwright on the occasion of the opening night of Black Tie. Gurney was surprised with the honor during the curtain call of the performance when the official proclamation was read aloud by Edelman onstage.
