The Broadway League has awarded New York Education Grants to two Broadway shows: Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Time Stands Still, by Donald Margulies, playing at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre; and the revival of The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, playing at Circle in the Square Theatre.

Each production will receive a $5,000 grant to be used toward its 2010 educational initiatives. The grants are important to the growth and development of theater education in the city as they encourage theaters to create more opportunities for young people and to exchange ideas about education.

High school students will take part in the playwriting program offered in conjunction with Time Stands Still, which has students write plays using themes that are in Margulies’ play. The young people’s work is then performed by professional actors who have assisted in the development process of the pieces. In the program held in conjunction with The Miracle Worker, middle school students will participate in a three-part, two-day educational series that will include seeing the production and participating in interactive workshops that focus on issues relating to Helen Keller’s childhood triumph over insurmountable odds.
