Filmmaker Abel Ferrara will direct a Broadway revival of Miguel Pinero’s 1974 play Short Eyes, according to a report in Variety. The production is aiming for an opening during the 2010-2011 season.

The play focuses on a racially mixed group of inmates in a New York prison who are joined by a middle class Caucasian who has been accused of raping a young girl. The term “short eyes” is prison slang for “pedophile.” The production will feature scenic design by Ferrara’s frequent collaborator production designer Frank DeCurtis, with casting and further details to be announced at a later date.

The play debuted at the Public Theater and later transferred to Broadway. It won an Obie Award as well as a New York Drama Critics Award. It later was turned into a movie which starred Bruce Davison and Pinero.

Ferrerra’s films include Bad Lietenant, King of New York, Mary, and Go Go Tales.
